Sri Lanka is taking strategic steps to position itself as a regional hub for artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, aiming to attract investments in data centres, cloud computing, and advanced digital technologies. Speaking at the GSMA Roundtable during MWC Shanghai 2026, Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne outlined the country’s vision to leverage its strategic location, international submarine cable connectivity, and growing digital infrastructure to support regional AI development.
With access to major submarine cable networks and ambitious renewable energy targets, Sri Lanka seeks to create an environment that supports AI-driven investment and digital innovation. However, achieving this vision will require continued investment in reliable power, cybersecurity, regulatory frameworks, skilled talent, and modern digital infrastructure.
As demand for AI computing capacity continues to rise across Asia, Sri Lanka’s ability to attract global technology companies and long-term capital will play a crucial role in establishing itself as a trusted destination for AI infrastructure and digital transformation.
