Ceylon Chamber and SGCCI Renew MoU to Strengthen Sri Lanka–Gujarat Business Ties

Ceylon Chamber & SGCCI Renew MoU

The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SGCCI), Surat, India, have renewed their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), reaffirming their commitment to strengthening business and economic ties between Sri Lanka and Gujarat.

The renewed MoU was signed by Krishan Balendra, Chairperson of The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, and Mr. Ashok Jirawala, President of SGCCI, during the visit of an SGCCI business delegation to Colombo.

The renewal comes at a time when businesses in both markets are exploring more targeted opportunities for trade, investment and commercial partnerships. Following the signing, the visiting delegation engaged with Sri Lankan companies through an interactive business networking session.

Opportunities Across Multiple Industries

The SGCCI delegation represented a diverse range of industries, including:

  • Textiles and apparel
  • Textile materials and garment accessories
  • Manufacturing and industrial products
  • Gems and jewellery
  • Waste management and waste-to-energy
  • Information technology
  • Spices and processed food

Discussions in the textile and apparel sector focused on opportunities for Gujarat-based suppliers to connect with Sri Lanka’s established apparel manufacturing industry. Manufacturers of garment accessories and industrial products also explored potential supply and distribution partnerships with Sri Lankan businesses.

The gems and jewellery sector was another key area of interest, with the delegation exploring opportunities to source Sri Lankan sapphires and other gemstones while establishing connections with local jewellery manufacturers, industry associations and women entrepreneurs.

Beyond traditional trade, discussions also covered investment and technology opportunities, particularly in areas such as waste-to-energy solutions and digital technologies. Participants further explored opportunities to expand two-way trade in spices and processed food products.

Strengthening Sri Lanka–India Business Connections

The engagement highlights the scale and diversity of Gujarat’s manufacturing and trading sector and the potential for Sri Lankan businesses to access new suppliers, markets, technologies and investment partners.

With the MoU renewed, both chambers will continue to facilitate business-to-business connections, exchange market and industry information, and support companies from Sri Lanka and Gujarat seeking to expand into each other’s markets.

The renewed partnership is expected to contribute to stronger commercial cooperation and create new opportunities for businesses in both Sri Lanka and Gujarat.
