SL Government Aims to Make Ratnapura a Global Gem and Jewellery Hub

The Sri Lankan Government aims to develop Ratnapura into a global hub for the gem and jewellery industry, Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Minister Sunil Handunnetti said at the opening of Gem City Ratnapura 2026 on Monday (31).

The three-day international gem and jewellery exhibition is being held from 31 August to 2 September 2026 at the Grand Silver Ray Hotel in Ratnapura. It is organised by the National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA) in collaboration with the Lanka Gem Dealers and Miners Association (LGDMA).

International investors and buyers from countries including the United States, China, Japan, Thailand, India and Spain are attending the exhibition.

Developing Ratnapura as a Global Gem Hub

Minister Handunnetti said the Government’s vision is to develop Ratnapura beyond a centre for locally mined gemstones and establish it as a global hub where imported and locally sourced gems can be value-added and exported to international markets.

The Government expects the gem and jewellery industry to generate US$2 billion in annual export revenue through value-added products.

The Minister also highlighted the importance of environmental protection, greater participation and empowerment of women, increased transparency and higher levels of value addition to strengthen the international competitiveness of Sri Lankan gems.

Expanding International Markets

Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath, delivering the keynote address, said Sri Lanka’s diplomatic missions overseas would be used to expand international markets for sapphires and other Sri Lankan gems.

He also said the Government plans to create international employment opportunities for local workers and attract foreign investment by linking the gem and jewellery industry with tourism.

Gem City Ratnapura 2026 brings together local and international buyers, traders and industry professionals, providing opportunities for Sri Lankan businesses and small and medium-scale entrepreneurs to access international markets.
