Japan × Sri Lanka Business & Salon Franchise Conference

Japan × Sri Lanka Business & Salon Franchise Conference

DPR participated in the Japan × Sri Lanka Business & Salon Franchise Conference held on Friday, 4 September 2026, in Colombo, bringing together Sri Lankan business representatives and Japanese business professionals to explore opportunities for commercial collaboration, market expansion, franchising and cross-border business partnerships.

The conference provided a platform for direct engagement between businesses from Sri Lanka and Japan, with discussions covering opportunities to enter each other’s markets, introduce business models and brands, and develop long-term commercial relationships.

Strengthening Japan–Sri Lanka Business Connections

The conference brought together Japanese business professionals with experience across areas including international business, human resources, technology and the beauty and salon industry.

Participants had the opportunity to engage directly with members of the Japanese delegation through networking and one-on-one discussions, allowing businesses to discuss their individual interests and explore potential areas of cooperation.

For DPR, the event provided an opportunity to connect with professionals involved in Japan–Sri Lanka business development and gain insights into potential opportunities for future collaboration.

The conference also comes at a time when the broader economic relationship between Sri Lanka and Japan continues to receive attention. In February 2026, the Intergovernmental Economic Policy Dialogue between the two countries resumed after a ten-year gap, with discussions focusing on industrial development, economic growth, investment and deeper integration into global supply chains. A Japanese business delegation of around 40 business leaders also participated in the dialogue.

Exploring Opportunities for Sri Lankan Businesses in Japan

One of the key areas highlighted at the conference was the potential for Sri Lankan businesses to access the Japanese market.

Discussions included opportunities for Sri Lankan products such as tea, spices, food, apparel and handicrafts, as well as the importance of understanding Japanese consumer preferences, market expectations and suitable distribution channels.

For Sri Lankan companies considering international expansion, entering a developed market such as Japan requires careful consideration of product positioning, regulatory requirements, distribution networks and potential local partnerships.

Creating direct connections with Japanese businesses can therefore provide valuable opportunities for Sri Lankan companies looking to understand the market and explore potential commercial relationships.

Bringing Japanese Business Models to Sri Lanka

The conference also explored opportunities for Japanese brands, services and business models to enter the Sri Lankan market.

A key area discussed during the event was the Japanese beauty and salon sector, including the potential introduction of Japanese salon concepts and franchise models to Sri Lanka.

Beyond the beauty industry, the broader concept of bringing established Japanese business practices and brands into Sri Lanka presents potential opportunities across a range of consumer and service sectors.

Such discussions are particularly relevant as Sri Lanka continues to seek greater foreign investment and international business partnerships.

Networking and One-to-One Business Discussions

A dedicated networking session provided participants with an opportunity to engage directly with members of the Japanese delegation and other Sri Lankan business representatives.

The one-to-one discussions enabled participants to:

  • Discuss their individual business interests and objectives
  • Explore potential partnerships with Japanese businesses
  • Identify opportunities for market entry and expansion
  • Exchange knowledge on products, services and business models
  • Develop relationships for future commercial collaboration

For businesses exploring international opportunities, direct engagement with potential partners can be an important first step towards understanding market requirements and identifying practical areas for cooperation.

Growing Investment Cooperation Between Sri Lanka and Japan

The conference took place against a wider backdrop of increasing engagement between Sri Lanka and Japan on business and investment.

In 2026, the Japan–Sri Lanka Committee on Business Environment has continued its quarterly engagement between Japanese businesses and Sri Lankan authorities. The fifth meeting was held on 25 August 2026, with participation from the Embassy of Japan, JETRO, JICA, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Japanese companies operating in Sri Lanka and relevant Sri Lankan authorities. Discussions focused on business and investment issues affecting Japanese enterprises and ways to improve the business environment.

The same day, the first meeting of the Sri Lanka–Japan Joint Working Group on Export-Oriented Industrial Corridor Development was launched. The working group is intended to support implementation of the Conceptual Roadmap on Building an Export-Oriented Industrial Corridor and includes representatives from Japanese and Sri Lankan government and business institutions.

Earlier in June, the fourth meeting of the Japan–Sri Lanka Committee on Business Environment also highlighted the importance of creating a conducive environment for investment and strengthening economic cooperation between the two countries.

These developments demonstrate the continued focus on strengthening the foundations for Japanese investment and wider business cooperation with Sri Lanka.
