Sri Lanka Targets 5 Million Annual Tourist Arrivals by 2030, with a renewed focus on tourist safety, infrastructure development and the preservation of its natural and cultural heritage.
Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath announced the target while speaking at the launch of the Gampaha District Tourism Promotion Strategic Plan in Negombo. He highlighted the importance of creating a safe, peaceful and stable environment to attract more international visitors and strengthen the country’s tourism industry.
As part of these efforts, the government plans to strengthen the Tourist Police through proposed legislative amendments that would grant the unit wider powers and establish a specialized structure separate from the regular police service. Plans also include recruiting additional officers to improve tourist protection.
The Minister emphasized that political and economic stability, alongside an environment free from ethnic, religious and extremist conflicts, would be essential to building international confidence in Sri Lanka as a travel destination.
Although the tourism industry continues to recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, further efforts are needed to achieve long-term stability and sustainable growth.
Minister Herath also stressed the importance of protecting Sri Lanka’s natural beauty, cultural heritage and renowned hospitality while continuing to develop tourism infrastructure. Preserving these assets is essential to ensuring that future generations can continue to experience the country’s unique attractions.
Achieving the target of 5 million annual tourist arrivals by 2030 will require continued investment, improved tourism services, stronger visitor safety measures and a commitment to sustainable tourism development. These efforts could further strengthen Sri Lanka’s position as an attractive destination for international travelers while supporting economic growth and employment.
