Cabinet Approves Proposal to Amend Ayurveda Act No. 31 of 1961 The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to prepare a draft bill to amend the Ayurveda Act No. 31 of 1961, which governs the regulation, development and control of Sri Lanka’s indigenous medical sector.
The Act covers Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and local therapies. Although amendments have been introduced over time to address changing requirements, the need for further amendments has been identified to improve the effective management of activities within the sector and strengthen its regulatory framework.
The proposed amendment aims to further formalise the regulation of the indigenous medical sector, facilitate the issuance of licences applicable to the export of local medicines, and support the sector’s progress and sustainable development.
Following the Cabinet’s approval, the Legal Draftsman has been directed to formulate a draft bill to amend the existing Act, based on a resolution submitted by the Minister of Health and Mass Media.
The proposed amendment marks a step towards strengthening the regulatory framework for Sri Lanka’s indigenous medical sector, with a focus on effective regulation, development and export-related licensing requirements.
