Sri Lanka and Romania Expand Cooperation in Employment, Trade and Investment

Sri Lanka and Romania are taking further steps to strengthen bilateral cooperation in employment, trade and investment following a business forum held in Timișoara, Romania, on 24 October 2026.

Organised by the Chambers of Commerce of Timiș and Arad, the forum was attended by Deputy Minister Arun Hemachandra, Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Romania, Samantha Pathirana, and representatives of the Romanian business community.

Discussions focused on expanding suitable employment opportunities for Sri Lankan workers, promoting ethical recruitment practices, strengthening worker protection, and identifying new opportunities for bilateral trade and investment.

Recognizing the Contribution of Sri Lankan Workers

More than 28,000 Sri Lankans are currently employed in Romania, contributing to various sectors of the country’s economy.

During the discussions, Florica Chiriță, President of the Timiș Chamber of Commerce, expressed satisfaction with the performance and commitment of Sri Lankan workers, highlighting their reliability, dedication and valuable contribution to Romanian businesses.

Proposed Romanian Business Mission to Sri Lanka in 2027

A key proposal emerging from the discussions was an initiative by the Timiș Chamber of Commerce to organise a Romanian business delegation visit to Sri Lanka in 2027.

The proposed mission is expected to bring together Romanian entrepreneurs interested in recruitment, trade and investment opportunities, creating further avenues for cooperation between the two countries.

Strengthening Bilateral Economic Relations

The forum represents a further step towards strengthening economic ties between Sri Lanka and Romania, with an emphasis on creating decent employment opportunities, ensuring fair and ethical recruitment, safeguarding the rights and welfare of Sri Lankan workers, and encouraging mutually beneficial trade and investment.

Sri Lanka continues to pursue international economic partnerships that create practical opportunities for its people while fostering sustainable cooperation with partner countries.
